Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Google Translate or DeepL?

Google Translate is excellent for casual sentences and supports 130+ languages but often mangles markdown formatting and over-literalizes idioms. DeepL is more natural for European languages but doesn't always preserve markdown well. Pickrack's Claude-based translator excels at preserving format and choosing tone, with the tradeoff of fewer languages (20) and a daily quota.

Does Anthropic train models on translation requests?

No. Anthropic's commercial API explicitly excludes API inputs from training, with deletion within 30 days. Pickrack passes only the source text and target language to Anthropic — no IP, no user account, no identifying metadata. We do not log inputs or translations on our side either.

How long can the source text be per translation?

8,000 characters per request — about 1,500-2,000 English words, or 3-4 pages. For longer documents, translate paragraph-by-paragraph (the model produces consistent terminology across paragraphs since the rate limit allows multiple back-to-back requests).

Does it work for technical content (code, APIs, math)?

Yes — Claude is trained on technical content and handles code blocks, API names, and math notation gracefully (it leaves identifiers untranslated, translates only comments and prose). For very specialized domains (legal, medical, pharmaceutical), have a domain expert review before publishing.

Can I translate a Word document or PDF?

Not directly — extract the text first ([PDF to Markdown](/tools/pdf/pdf-to-markdown/), [Word to PDF](/tools/pdf/word-to-pdf/) → markdown extract), then paste. Native document translation is on the roadmap.

What about regional dialects (US vs UK English, Mainland vs Taiwan Chinese)?

v1 supports Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) separately. For other regional variations (Brazilian vs European Portuguese, US vs UK English), Claude defaults to the most common variant — specify in your input if you need a particular dialect.

How accurate is it?

For everyday content (blog posts, marketing copy, casual messages), output is usually publication-ready. For high-stakes content (contracts, medical advice, court filings), always have a human translator review. AI translation, even from Claude, can occasionally miss legal nuance.

How many translations can I run per day?

10 translations per IP per 24 hours. Reset is rolling — if you used 5 yesterday at 3pm, those slots free up at 3pm today. Tighter than ChatGPT's quota but free, with no signup, and doesn't degrade based on time of day.
