Split a bill, add a tip, round up the total — fast math for restaurants, taxis, and group meals across 7 currencies.

Tip Calculator is one of those tools you only need three times a year but always need *right now* — at a restaurant table, in a taxi at the airport, splitting a bar tab with friends. Pulling out a calculator app, typing the bill, multiplying by 0.18, dividing by 4 people — it's a 30-second exercise that this tool turns into 5 seconds.

Pickrack's Tip Calculator runs entirely in your browser. It supports 7 currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, VND, JPY, AUD, CAD) with currency-appropriate decimal handling (VND and JPY have no fractional currency, the rest use 2 decimals). Five preset tip percentages (10/15/18/20/25%) plus a 0-50% slider. A people-counter (1-50) for splitting. And a 'round up to whole' toggle for tidy totals.

Free, no signup, no ads on this page above the fold. The whole tool fits in one viewport on mobile.

When to use

  • Restaurant meal — split the bill 4 ways with a 20% tip in 5 seconds
  • Group taxi from the airport — split fare among 3 people, round up so the driver gets cash without change
  • Bar tab — calculate the standard 18% tip on a complicated drinks tab
  • Hair salon or spa — figure out the 15-20% gratuity expected in service industries
  • Travel abroad — switch to the local currency and check what 10-15% looks like in EUR or JPY before tipping
  • Tax tracking — when a bill includes tax, calculate the tip on the pre-tax subtotal (paste subtotal, not total)

Frequently asked questions

What's the standard tip percentage in the US?

Restaurants: 18-22% for table service, 10-15% for buffet. Bars: $1-2 per drink or 15-20%. Taxis/rideshare: 15-20%. Hair salons: 15-20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2-5/night. These have crept up post-2020; pre-pandemic norm was 15%.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Pre-tax is mathematically correct (you're tipping for service, not paying tax on tax). In practice, many people tip on the post-tax total — easier mental math, and the difference is usually under $1-2. Tip on whichever feels right; servers won't notice the difference.

Do European countries have the same tip culture?

No. Most of Europe includes service charge in the bill (look for 'service compris' in France, 'coperto' in Italy). Tipping 5-10% in cash for excellent service is appreciated but not required. Vietnam, Japan, and most of East Asia: no tipping (or very small).

Why does this calculator support VND and JPY without decimals?

Vietnamese Dong and Japanese Yen have no smaller subunit — there's no 0.5 VND or 0.5 JPY. Showing 'Tip: ₫9,234.56' would be wrong. The tool detects these and displays whole numbers.

What's the difference between rounding the total up vs. rounding the tip up?

This tool rounds the *total* (bill + tip) up. So if your total is $23.40 and you check the round-up box, it becomes $24, increasing your tip slightly. Some people prefer rounding the tip itself to a nice number (e.g., $4.50 → $5). Both are valid; this tool implements the former for consistent totals.

Can I save my tip preferences for next time?

Not currently — v1 is stateless to keep privacy simple. localStorage-based preferences (default tip %, default people, default currency) are on the roadmap.

What if my bill is in a currency not listed?

Pick the closest 'shape' (USD if your currency uses 2 decimals, JPY if it has no decimals). The math is the same regardless of currency — only the symbol changes. The 7 currencies are the ones most-searched by Pickrack visitors.
