Frequently asked questions

How well does PDF to EPUB conversion actually work?

Excellent for text-based PDFs with clear chapter structure (novels, academic papers, reports). Mixed for PDFs with complex layouts (multi-column journals, graphics-heavy magazines). Poor for scanned PDFs without OCR — the EPUB will be empty because there's no extractable text. For complex layouts, expect to spend 5-10 minutes cleaning up the EPUB in Calibre desktop afterward.

Why is my converted EPUB empty or showing only blank pages?

The PDF probably has scanned image content with no underlying text layer. Run the PDF through OCR first (Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY FineReader, Tesseract) to add a text layer, then convert. Pickrack's OCR tool is on the roadmap.

Will the EPUB work on Kindle?

Yes. Email the .epub to your Send-to-Kindle address (settings → My Account → Devices) and Amazon auto-converts to AZW3 within minutes. Or use the Send to Kindle desktop app for direct sideloading.

Does it preserve images?

Yes. Calibre extracts embedded PDF images and re-embeds them in the EPUB. Image positioning may shift due to reflow — they'll be inline rather than at fixed coordinates. For image-heavy content, fixed-layout EPUB or PDF is a better choice.

What about footnotes, citations, and cross-references?

Calibre attempts to detect footnotes and convert them to EPUB-style popup footnotes (clickable, opens inline). Cross-references usually become hyperlinks. Quality varies with PDF source — academic PDFs with consistent footnote formatting work well; messy PDFs may have broken references.

Will tables, charts, and equations look right?

Tables: usually OK, sometimes wrap awkwardly. Charts: preserved as images. Equations: depend on PDF source — text-based equations may look fine; LaTeX-rendered equations may be split or distorted. For technical/scientific reading, EPUB output should be reviewed before sharing.

What's the difference between EPUB and AZW3 (Kindle format)?

EPUB is the open standard used by Kobo, Apple Books, and most non-Amazon readers. AZW3 (Kindle Format X) is Amazon's proprietary format, derived from EPUB but with DRM hooks. Send EPUB to Kindle via email and Amazon auto-converts. Or use Calibre desktop's convert to make AZW3 directly if you need it.

Can I edit the EPUB after conversion?

Yes — install Calibre desktop (free) and use its built-in editor. You can fix text flow issues, adjust the table of contents, replace the cover, and customize CSS. Calibre also has a regex-based search/replace tool useful for cleaning up OCR errors.
